MILK SUPPLIES.

The refusal of the Milk Council to extend the hours of delivery of milk to nine o'clock instead of half-past eight, a request that was made by the Auckland fresh milk producers and vendors, is unfair to that section of the producers. The report states that the majority of dairymen vendors conformed to the hours already fixed. This may be "true, but it is under threat of being prosecuted, and brought before the Court and having to pay a fine and costs running into a few pounds. Hardship is caused bv the unreasonable attitude of the council. The fact that the hour has been putforward from 3 a.m. to 2.30 a.m. is of 110 benefit to the men who deliver fresh morningmilk to their customers. It means that they have to start milking at midnight or before to finish the round by 8.30 a.m.. or else they are prosecuted. Does the public think our request for an extra half-hour is unreasonable, seeing that the cows have first to be milked, and that in all weathers fresh morning milk is delivered to the customers? The statement that the majority of vendors asked foi; a two o'clock start does not apply to the dairymen vendors. The statement that the vast majority of consumers want their milk before seven o'clock may or may not be correct, as some of the fresh milk vendors had no need to start their round before seven o'clock until forced by the council, when they lost customers because they had to call too early. In reply to Mr. Haslam, I would like to point out that it was not the intention of the fresh milk section to ask for preferential treatment, but they expected that if the half-hour extension was granted it would applv to all concerned. * M. T. WELSH.
