RUGBY UNION.

RECORD ENTRIES.

JUNIOR BOYS AND SCHOOLS.

OVER 3000 PLAYERS

Mr. Arthur Baker presided at last night's meeting of the Auckland Rugby Football Union, when it was announced that record entries had been received in the junior boys' section, the number of teams having increased from 28 to 35.

ilr. A. B. Floyd also reported record entries in primary schools' competitions, last year's record figure of 144 teams having been left well behind by the 166 teams to compete this year.

The chairman remarks! that it was very gratifying to have fresh records put tip every year for aIL these juvenile competitions, the number of players for the 201 teams representing a minimum of over 3000 players.

8. F. Goodwin, formerly of Thames, who played a good game for Grafton in the opening match last Saturday, was given a transfer to North Shore.

E. ("Snowy") Neal. the former Wellington (Poneke) and Auckland representative, was granted a transfer from Grafton to Takapuna senior B. He stated that he had given up serious football, but wae anxious to assist the Takapuna Club.

Other transfers approved: T. Blomfield, Takapuna to Eden; M. Boyce, South Auckland to Manukau Rovers; E. C. Brenstrum, Takapuna to Eden.

Among the reinstatements to be submitted to the New Zealand Rugby Union was that of R. W. S. Marshall, a member of tlie Richmond Rugby League seniors from 1!>31 to 1936. He intends playing for North Shore.

Other reinstatements recommended: H. Holmes (Richmond), C. R. Wynne (North Shore), F. C. Beckinan (Northcote). Henry Murray (Waiuku), G. M. Whiskey (Tuakau). Coronation Day Fixtures. The South Auckland Rugby Union wrote accepting an invitation for its representative team to play a match at Eden l'ark on Coronation Day.

On that occasion Auckland's first fifteen is scheduled to meet Waikato, at Hamilton.

The Auckland University senior team, which has a bye on Saturday, was granted permission to travel to Pukekohe to play the White Star seniors. The chairman said it was very pleasing to note that cityteams were going to sub-union areas when the opportunity offered. A report on the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union was received from the Auckland delegates, Messrs. A. Baker and H. Frost (the latter of whom replaced Mr. A. J. Billington, who was unable to visit Wellington on April 21). It stated that the constitution for the New Zealand Council of 14 members was approved by 54 votes to 20. The Taranaki proposal in favour of reverting to the 2 3- 2 scrum and the wing-foi ward received very iittle support; that it had been decided to play 45-minute spells in all inter-provincial matches this season.

Of importance to Auckland was the decision to play amended rules this season, except for the Springbok and Test trials. Services' Mid-week Matches. The United Services were granted the use of Eden Park for mid-week matches, and a charge of 6d approved.

In reply to a delegation from the United Services mid-week competition it was stated that under the rules of the game players disqualified for any reason lroiu the Rugby Union code could tinder no circumstances participate in the mid-week competition.

A letter was received from Rear-Admiral the Hon. E. R. Drumiiiond thanking the union for its help in making the recent visit of the Australian Naval Squadron a success.

Ground officials for Saturday:—Domain, Mr. G. Nicholson; Sturges Park, Messrs. Murdoch, Floyd; Devonport, Messrs. Foy, Syers; Show Grounds, Messrs. Harvey, Sweeney ; Victoria l'ark, Messrs. Laurie, Fletcher.

Transport Too Expensive. The difficulties imposed on lower-grade football teams owing to the rise in transport costs were keenly discussed. The question was brought up by the Junior Boys' Board, which asked for increased travelling expenses for teams under its jurisdiction.

The Manukau Rugby Club also brought up the question, referring to the shortage of grounds in its district and the greater financial strain consequently imposed on young players by travelling to other grounds.

Mr. O. S. Harvey said the days when it was possible to get some local carrier to transport a football team to its destination on a Saturday afternoon for 10/ or so were gone. Nowadays they could not do so unless licensed, and most of them were not prepared to take the risk of a penalty. The cost of licensed buses had risen lieavily since last season, from 20/ to 35/ in some instances.

Mr. Baker said it might be possible to get from the licensing authorities a special dispensation in order to allow carriers to transport football teams in their lorries on a Saturday afternoon.

Mr. George Nicholson stated that when the allowance for travelling expenses were first introduced, they were meant to apply only to schoolboys, but now many players in the sixth grade, in particular, were working.

Mr. R. J. Billingham, representing the Junior Boys' Board, said that, to illustrate how the cost of transport had gone up, a tender last year for transporting a team from Otahuhu to Avondale was £1 10/. This year it was £2 10/. One club could have placed an additional team in one particular grade but for the problem of travelling expenses.

The chairman said the union had never professed to pay all travelling expenses for lower-grade players, but merely to subsidise them.

Mr. A. Tilly: If a player is working, he should be able to meet his own expenses. The application was referred to the finance committee.
