"DUMKY" TRIO.

CHAMBER ftUSIC SOCIETY

ARTISTIC PERFORMANCES. Outstanding in the Auckland Chamber i Music Society's first concert of the 6easoh,; given in the Lewis Eady 11a 11. last even- 1 ing, was Anton Dvorak's characteristic "Dumky" Trio. Its themes,*, based upon folk songs, not only are most interesting and captivating, but full also of charm and variety; plaintive, yearning melodies are followed by bursts of wild gaiety, melancholy airs alternate with gay rhythmic measures. The changing moods of the composition were very capably expressed by. Haydn Murray (violin), Lalla Hemus ('cello) and Dora Judson (piano), who combined with much artistry to present an exceptionally fine performance, one that thoroughly deserved the warm applause that followed at its conclusion. Special mention should be made here of the .playing of the 'cellist. The 'cello in this charming work has a. prominent part throughout arid Miss Hemus gave one of her best performances to date. The ensemble in Schumann's D Minor piano trio, with which the concert opened, was very - evenly balanced and the players —the same who played the "Dumky" 'trio j r—gave- a crisp arid' virile performance,! notable for rnicc gradations .of- light and shade. i•' - - V;':' '. r In. addition to the two !piano trios, Beethoven's. Sonata in A Major, for 'cello and. piano, was presented, the players being Lalla Hemiis and Dora Judson, who gave .a' tasteful, performance which met with a just meed of applause. An'extra word of praise is due to Miss Judson, .whose sureness and musicianship overcame the considerable drawback of an unsatisfactory instrument, giving confidence and providing an inspiration to her .associates throughout the evening. The .players are to be congratulated tiporj the high standard of performance achieved, the result, no doubt, of long and painstaking rehearsal, which brought its reward in the appreciative applause of the audience, and the society upon a most successful opening concert.
