GOODS TRAIN STALLS.
EXPRESS ONE HOUR IjATE,
Owing to a goods train stalling this morning on the steep gradient between Pokeno and Whangavata, about 50 miles south of Auckland, the express from Wellington due at 7.10, did not arrive until 8.20.
The greasy surface of tlie rails earned by light misty rain during the' night ' was responsible for the wheels of the goods train failing to grip near the top of the gradient, and difficulty was further increased by the heavy load, carried. Assistance from a relief" engine; however,, was given, and the train was I finally moved to the top of the rise, after a delay of 50 minutes, after which the passenger express was able to con- i tinue to Auckland. j
