INFANTILE PARALYSIS.
Tlie tlianks of the community arc due to Dr. Hastings for his outspoken comments at the Hospital Board meeting on Tuesday last, and for the board's recommendation to the Minister of Health that the schools in the Auckland Province ],e closed at once. This is another matter which both Dr. Fasting and the Hospital Board might well look into with a view to the further prevention of both thi* and other diseasiv—the books in our public libraries. ])(,es the board realise that the*e books arc never fumigated and that thousands of them «o in and out of public libraries everyday in the week? Upon making inquiries from the authorities 1 anl jold ir is imprniticahle to have the bonks fumiiated. but would like to say that, quite apart from any humanitarian aspe/t <if the" qne-iion. in the loner run it will be niui-li cheaper for us to see these books nre properly fumigated than 4o have to pay enormously i-i •roi-e:'. hospital levies. Another matter of vital imiiortance to the health of tlic <itizei]~ of Auckland m the sewage outlet at Orakei. Fur ye:irs it has been known thi- outlet mo<t da'nperoil*. yet year after yea- the muter renuiin" unsettled v.hi!«t inillion-s are lieinp spent on unproductive |iiibls:- works. We .ue told by Dr. Watt. Director*kMieral of Health, that infantile paralysis is .sporadic. Is tli> tn be wondered at when we have uli.it i- no Wttothan a ccs< j;ool ripht at our city door a: Auckland, and the wmp eor-di!!,in* ';.revnili"-' in other cities in the Dominion as well? The sooner we tackle the-;-- problems fr.un t 1 " , rifrht ansle with a view to the prevention instead of the cure of our many ill- the l>ci:efor us all. both iiiianeiaUv ;:r..l'ot he. u i-e. Tin" public will not object to payinir a rc:i—-iribl\ enhanced library fee if they are assured of the hooks bein.LT clean and iiedtliv. and a \ i-i? to tlie hill at Orakei overlooking the sewa?<." outfall will convince anybody of -,'n-- desirability of havinfr this attended to without any further delav.
