ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council hust night was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. J. Park.

Balance-sheet for Year.-The balancesheet for the year ended March 31 was presented to the council. The accounts disclosed that the year opened with an overdraft of £9719, and satisfaction wae expressed that in spite of certain unforseen expenditure the overdraft had be"n reduced to £8157. The principal item« ot expenditure were:—lnterest, principal repayments £18.022, hospital levy £3417 streets lighting £1202, waterworks £3778' streets and footpaths £6929, cemeteries £23.38, other items of expenditure amounted to £13,996, total .payments £.50,582. On the receipts side the main items were:—Rates £33,107, water by meter £7o!K>, heavy traffic licenses £1460 petrol tax £2477. cemeteries £3O4o! sundries £3470, total receipts £51.144. The surplus of receipts over repayments wa.i £1502.

AN ater Supply.- The council's request that the water supply to the Penrose railway station be allowed to remain in stal'.i quo wns declined by the One Tree Hill Borough Council, which intimated that •it would again approach the Railway Department with the object of having the .supply transferred to One Tree Hill, as cast iron writer mains had now been laid ill Station • Road and the vicinity. The opinion was expressed in the letter that I Oneliunga. had for 23 years supplied water j to the Penrose station at a profit over and above the cost of the main to the station, and One Tree Hill could not allow outside local authorities to supply within its borough indefinitely. The station property, it was asserted, was nonrateable. Auckland Museum. —The council's contribution towards the maintenance of the Auckland Institute and Museum, it was reported, had been assessed at £265 4/8, and is payable by June 30 next. Offer Accepted.—The council accepted the offer of Mr. McDonald to donate a piece of his section of land at the corner of Chamberlain Avenue and Mount Albeit Koad. Clerk and Supervisor.- MrT G. Ballantyne was appointed to th<; position of j clerk of works on the Angle and Patrick Streets drainage contracts at a salary of £0 per week. He was also engaged ;.s supervisor of housing survey operations. Funeral Charges.- The S<". John's Cemetery Trust Board advised that it charged 15/ for funerals held on Sundays, Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day. The council decided that the present policy of digging graves in outside cemeteries be continued a*, the lsual charges, one of the sextons to be employed for one hour and a half on Saturday to assist when necessary. Leaking Taps.--Thc repairing of leaking taps was let by contract for a period of "six months as a trial to Mr. Williams at »S;1 per lap, the council to supply washers. Tender For Pipes.—The engineer reported that the sub-committee had received a cabled tender from W. Coward and Company. London, for the supply of 10.000 feet, of water .pipes. This was much ; higher than local tenders and the committee had therefore accepted the tender of J. Duthie and Co. Mount Smart Domain. —Sitting as the Mount Smart Domain Board the council considered a letter from the district engineer, who stated that his ganger in charge of the scoria pit was concerned with the condition of the faces in the old workings to the north of the Railway Department's places. The council decided to remove the dangerous portions. Waitakere Scenic Drive. —In response to a letter from the City Council it was decided to borrow the amount of Onchunga's contribution towards the Waitakere Scenic Drive. Purchase of Property.—The council agreed to purchase a property in Queen Street, known as Halstead's block, in order to wind up an estate at a price uot exceeding £1500. plus agent's costs.
