'VARSITY "CULTURE."
PROFESSOR'S ATTACK. POSITION OF THE W.E.A. , (Own Correspondent.—Air Mall.) LOXDOX, March 22. "Speaking from personal experience. 1 do not owe any general information which I possess to three years' study at and 20 years' teaching in a university." The "personal experience" is that'of Professor Lancelot Hogben. He was making an attack on the "culture" of the universities at a Workers' Educational Association conference at Bedford during the week-end. Criticising the suggestion that the object of the W.E.A. should be to "make the culture of the universities available to the humblest workers," Professor Hogben added: "Culture means the preparation for intelligent citizenship, equipment for leadership in civic affairs! or enlarged opportunity for personal enjoyment.
"The expensively uneducated politicians produced by our universities are the last persons to help us ill making available the plenty which science ciin provide for all. "By fearless criticism of the shortcomings of our universities, the W.K.A. can strengthen the hands of those who realise what the universities could do if they undertook tasks worthy of their opportunities."
