LARGE SUM IX RELIEF.

DUXEDIX, Friday. Five charges of making false declarations under the Employment Act were preferred against John Reid in the Dunedin Police Court to-dav. He pleaded guilty.
Cliief Detective Young said defendant was on relief work. - He had made eight false declarations, but was being charged in respect to only five. He failed to disclose that his wife was working. She had been in regular employment since December.
Defendant received relief amounting to £98 17/ in excess of what he would have got if he had made a truthful statement," said Mr. Young.
Mr. O. G. Stevens, for +he defendant, said there were some anomalies in connection with the case. He asked the magistrate to take that fact into consideration. Reid was an ex-Imperial soldier and had been a member of the Cameron Highlanders for twenty years. He had been offered work for three "hours a week.
Commenting that the amount involved was substantial, the magistrate, Mr. H. W. Bundle, fined Reid £20 and costs on each of four charges, the sum to be paid at the rate of 5/ a week. He was convicted on only the fifth charge.
