WHANGAREI POSITION.

CREDIT BALANCE OF £2642.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Friday. In a financial review submitted to the Whangarei County Council yesterday, the treasurer, Mr. H. C. Hemphill, stated that the turnover for 1936-37 totalled £120,362. The year's operations resulted in a credit balance of £2642, compared with £7534 for' the previous year. The cost of administration, based on expenditure only, equalled £5 13/ per cent.

The public debt of £103,309 had been further reduced by £2100 and now Stood at £70,338, equal to 1.61 per cent of the capital value of the county. Revenue received during the year from the State and State department, amounted to £25,502, or £3957 in ex* cess of the total general and special rates collectable. The percentages of rate collections were:—General rates, 86.57; special loan rates, 80.27; harbour rates, 85.26; 'Applications to the adjustment committee resulted in a disappointing collection in the Mangalcahia riding (00.24 percent). 'Tarties interested in applications for .review," the treasurer stated, "refuse to pay the rates until after the hearing, notwithstanding that rates are not an adjustable item." The collection, in all other ridings was satisfactory, and in excess of the estimated returns.
