HANDICAPPER RESIGNS.
MR. J. HENRYS' DECISION. FORTY-SIX YEARS WITH C.J.C. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH. this clay. The resignation of Mr. J. E. Henrys ae handicapper to the Canterbury Jockey Club has been received. On May 25 Mr. Henrye will have completed 46 years ae the Canterbury Jockey Club's weight adjuster. He ie, in fact, the only handicapper the club hae had, for before liw appointment a committee of three stewards did the handicapping. At the time of hie appointment Mr. Henrye wae a very young man. Hie firet work as handicapper was done for the Feilding Jockey Club, of which club he aleo acted as steward for a number of yeare. He quickly built up a reputation for hie accurate summing up of form, being a very capable judge of horeee and racing even ae a young man. For.years paet he hae been recognised ae New Zealand's premier handicapper. Hie capable work soon attracted attention, with the result that he gradually built up a wide connection ae a handicapper. The greatest tribute to hie ability wae the long list of racing clube for which he acted at an early period of hie career. Clube he handicapped for were Feilding, Manawatu, Rangitikei, Egmont, Nelson, Marlborough, Mavton, Woodville, Patea, WaverieyWaitotara, Ash hunt, : Otakj, TaratahiCarterton and Pabiatua, in addition to others that have disappeared from the calendar. Aβ time went on many clube in the South Island claimed hie services, and for many years he hae done the handicapping for nearly every racing club, and for all the huiit clube in Canterbury, while he hae acted also for a number of Otajro clubs. H'» loyalty, to the Canterbury Jockey Club was proverbial. On various occasions he refused handicapping positions in thr Dominion which woald have Ponfliefed with hie work at'Riccartnn. It is also well known . that «om«; aso he turned d6wn an appointment that whs .jiffered him by; one of the leading clube'' in Australia. He has a wonderful record so far ae Riccarton ie concerned. A few yeare ago be. made a trip to England, but except for-that period of absence he has never missed 'seeing a day's racing toy- the Canterbury Jockey Club since lie •wae appointed the club'e handicapper.
