JUNIOR BOARD MATTERS.
WELCOME TO MR. COURTNEY.
Presiding at the annual meeting of the junior management committee of the Auckland Rugby League last evening, Mr. D. Wilkie congratulated officials on progress la6t year and thanked clubs and delegates for co-operation. The report, specially emphasising the services of the chairman (Mr. D. Wilkie), vice-chairman (Mr. E. Chapman) and grounds allocator (Mr. I. Stonex), after recording with regret the retirement of Mr. E. Chirmside (assistant secretary), eaid the junior side of the game had experienced a very successful 1936 season, the tabulated grade championships being won as follow: Senior B, Papakura; second grade, R.V.; thirds, Ellerslie; fourthu, City Rovers; fifths. Glen Ora; sixths, Richmond; sevenths, Otahuhu. The knock-outs were won by Point Chevalier (senior B), Mount Albert (second grade), City Rovers (third, fourth and sixth grades) and Otahuhu (fifth grade). The special rounds in the senior B and seventh grades for the Walmsley miniature shields were won by Papakura, and Richmond and City tied for the seventh grade. The Davis Points Shield went to Richmond, with City second. Sixty teams took •part in the junior team grade competitions. The club ballot for members of the executive board resulted in the reappointment of Messrs. D. Wilkie, E. Chapman, A. Hopkinson, C. Howe, I. Stonex, R. Short and F. Thompson, with Mr. E. McNamara as a new member. As the result of a tie for the ninth member, it was decided to hold a special vote frpm the clubs to decide between Messrs. R. Parr and T. Carey, nominations to be in hand by April 6. Mr. Wilkie subsequently was re-elected chairman and Mr. W. F. Clarke honorary secretary of the board.
Discussion _ took place on the question of grade weights and it was also decided to again represent to the authorities the wisdom of an increased transfer fee to junior clnbs as compensation for the taking of players by senior clubs.
In regard to a suggestion that the second grade be absorbed in the senior B or that senior B teams and reserve grade teams combine for the purposes of competition, it was resolved to leave the matter in abeyance pending the result of team nominations.
The chairman referred with regret to the resignation owing to ill-health of Mr. George Taylor, a member of the board, and to Mr. _ Chirmside, who had been associated with the junior management since its inception. He thanked them for their services, and Mr. Chirmside said his membership had been a great pleasure. An enthusiastic welcome was extended to Mr. Roy Courtney, donor of the international trophy, who, owing to his departure for Australia this afternoon, took <V opportunity of paying a courtesy call. Mr. Courtney, who was a school player in other years in Christchurch, acknowledging the tribute, said he hoped that any little effort or compliment by him to the game would be an incentive to junior players to strive to make their mark in the highest flights in the code. He was proud to be able to do something towards the cementing of goodwill between Australia and New Zealand in this realm of sport. (Applause.)
