MODEL SUBURB.
ON- LAND RAISED BY 'QUAKE.
DWELLINGS IN NAPIER,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
NAPIER, this day,
It is learned that the Government intends to acquire possession of an area of 60 acres of Harbour Board endowment land ih order to erect 215 new dwellings as Napier's part in the national housing scheme. The area in question is part of the Marewa block of 475 acres which was raised above sea level by the earthquake of 1931 and which recently was incorporated within the Napier borough boundaries for development as a model residential suburb. The owners of the land, the Napier Harbour Board, which still retains the freehold while leasing the area to the Napier Borough Council, attempted to negotiate with the Government on a leasehold basis. The Government, however, was unwilling to take the area for housing purposes on such terms, i The Under-Secretary for Housing, Mr. J. A. Lee, in response to the board's suggestion of a leasehold, stated that the Government's answer was: "A definite negative."
