ANNIVERSARY DAY.
INCORRECT OBSERVANCE.
ACTION TAKEN BY MAYOR. Holding the view that the question is one upon which a final authoritative decision might well be given, the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, has written to the Internal Affairs Department suggesting that, if practicable, Auckland's anniversary date should be fixed as the actual date, January 30, and not January 29, the date upon which the anniversary is observed.
Mr. Davis has received advice from the Under-Secretary of the Department, Mr. J. W. Heenan, that the matter will be considered by the National Historical P>esearch Committee, which the Government proposes to set up in connection with New Zealand's Centennial.
It was explained by the Mayor to-day that his inquiries indicated that the proposal he had advanced wa* not as simple of adoption as might appear on th» surface, yet he was hopeful at least that finality would be brought to an that had for a long time merited < .Tuial clarification.
