NEW SCENIC ROAD.
TOKAANU TO TAUMMUINUI.
PROGRESS OF WOBK.
Reports that the road under construction between Tokaanu, at the southern end of Lake Taupo, and Taamarnnni, would be completed and ready for traffic by next summer appear a little premature in view of inquiries made by the Automobile Association. It has been ascertained by representatives of the association that there are several years of work to be done, unless the number of men engaged on the project is considerably augmeitedAt the present time approximately 100 men are working on the route, which, when completed, should prove a pleasant scenic drive. Thirteen miles of the new road from the Taumarunui eide nave been metalled. The actual distance from Taumarunui to Tokaanu is 38 miles, but the piece of road under construction at the present time is only 23 miles long. Progress from the Tokaanu end has been very slow owing to the rough nature of the surrounding country. Motorists wishing to go from Tokaanu to Taumarunui are forced to take the National Park route (about 78 miles). The new road will shorten the distance to 38 miles. Residents of Taumarunm are looking forward to the formation of the new road, since it will enable large quantities of stock to be brought in from the farms about Tokaanu to the sales at Taumarunui. The building of the road should also facilitate the orrw?e of timber, which has previously been brought across country l»y "bush tram.
