Colonel Smyth, who is a brother-in-law to Lord Galway, served in both the South African and Great Wars, retiring in 1023. Mr. Maxwell Gage, formerly a student at the Auckland and Victoria University Colleges, and now employed on Government geological and industrial research work in the South Island, has been awarded the Sir .Julius Von Haast pii/.e in geology.
