" GOLD-DIGGING."
I The title of Mr. Reginald Tumor's new novel. "Polite Seen;'" (Duckworthl i gives, perhaps, some indication of hi.* j remarkably smooth and competent handling of an unsavoury theme. His mnjii characters are ('.race Rentier, an elderly childless widow, wealthy, lovable and rather stupid, and Kric Thealc, a parasitic young arti«t who deliberately sets about winning her affection and! ultimately her money. Although Mrs. I Bentley's friends and relations are asj aware as the reader is of Theale's real ! bareness, their warnings have no effect, i and in spite of a hastening of incident i and surprise during the few chapters. Theale's plot moves with a steady inevitability to its triumphant oonclu- i sion. Tn striking contract to the fools and perverts who for the most part! people this book. i« Ursula. f!race's ', niece, who. apart from anything else in; this novel, makes it worth reading. j . . j
