STEEL SHORTAGE.

EFFECT ON OAR PRODUCTION.

NO SERIOUS HINDRANCE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Confirmation of private reports that' the shortage of steel and other materials in England caused by rearmament needs is not hampering motor car manufacturers as seriously as h>»3 been stated was given by Mr. A. \V. Hawley, representative in New Zealand of the Society of Motor Manufacturer*, today. I Mr. Hawley said that while in England he had found in some instances a tem j porary shortage and delay in the supply! of cars, but it was not serious. The statement that the shortage of materials | was hindering production seriously was| denied by the fact that England was at the moment exporting more cars than at any previous time in the history of the motor car industry. Added to any trouble in the procuring of materials '■ was the great increase in the demand for i cars within England.

All industries, especially heavy indus- \ tries, had felt the effect of the short-; age, said Mr. Hawley, but motor car manufacturing, no more than any other. If the demand had not been larger last year, factories would have been right up to it, but as a result of his personal investigations he could say there was no indication of serious delay.
