UNION AIRWAYS SERVICE.
PREPARING FOR START,
Work was commenced on Monday l>v the Kdwards Construction Company on the erection at the Mangere aerodrome of a hangar for I'niou Airways. Limited, which is hoping to Jiave everything in readiness l>y .lime 1 to 'commence its Auckland-New Plymouth-Wellington air
The foundations for the structure, which will be a valuable contribution to the buildings at the aerodrome, are being prepared at the moment, and it is proposed if possible to complete the work by the middle of April. The new hangar will be situated immediately behind the existing hangar, and on four acres of land adjoining the aerodrome which were recently acquired by the Auckland Aero dub. and are now in the process of being levelled. Although there was ample ground available on the club's property for an additional hangar, it was found difficult to construct one in such a manner that it would not interfere with the existing runways.
The overall dimensions of the new hangar will be 127 ft by 70ft, and of this an area of 70ft by 90ft will, be for aircraft. The remainder of the space will be set aside for offices, a lounge, a pilots' room, workshop and storeroom. The building will be steel framed throughout, and the doorway, which will face in an easterly direction, will be !)oft long by 18ft high. The doore will lie all steel, and will run up and down on ball-bearing tracks.
Union Airways will commence its service with a ten-passenger Lockheed
"Electra" 'plane, which 1m at present being constructed in America. Only one machine will be housed in the hangar at the outset, but there will be ample provision for other 'planes and for the future development of the service. The Lockheed will be equipped with the latest devices installed in aircraft, and will be propelled by two 450 horse-power Pratt and Whitney radial engines. The speed of the machine will be between 173 miles per hour to a maximum of 210 miles per hour at 5000 ft. Thie will put Wellington inside the two-hour range from Auckland.
