The Patent Office refused I.am son patent* on * flying machine on the ground* that the (iovernnient would not grant patents upon thing* that were Impossible, like flyiu-; machine* and perpetual motion. Scientists are performing impossibilities evei v day. (lold and diamond* can be made. The transmutation of metals may well become a commercial possibility, and, when it does, what will we do with that cellar full of jrold the Administration eonfiscated. the manipulation and mis-application <if which upsets our economic life and keeps men out of employment in n land of plentv w here there is a real shortage of labour* But this isn t what 1 started to write about. The accomplishment of impossibilities tis the promise of scientist*. Modern miracle* are rarely the result of accident, and the average man ha* a* little business trying to perform impossibilities ns he has playing with dynamite. All of us. at one time or another, have wasted a lot of time we can never replace attempting the impossible—not often in the line of scientific discovery—more frequently in attempting the impossible in the promotion of business. In every one of these canes thorough and scientific investigation would have saved us from wasting time and money upon impossibilities.— (X.A.X.A.)
