N.Z. SOLDIER'S FATE.
FOUND SHOT IN POONA. (Received 11.30 a.m.) BOMBAY. March 3.
A N'ew Zenlander. Colonel Jasper Gray Frere, a retired Indian Army officer, was found shot dead in hospital at Poona. following a month's illness. A pistol lav near his l>odv.
Born at Kurow, North Otago, Colonel Frere last held the post of deputyassistant Quartermaster-General for the Northern Command, India, prior to which he was attached to the Western Command. He served in the European war from 1914 to HUH (mentioned in dispatches four times, M.C., D.5.0.), and in India ever since.
Colonel Frere's father, the Rev. H. C. Frere, was in New Zealand from 1887 to 1H97 and was vicar of Waitaki and viear of Waitotara respectively, before returning to England.
