EXPORTS AND IMPORTS

TURNOVER INCREASE 20 PER CENT

Trade between New Zealand and the United States increased by over 20 _ per cent last year, as compared with 193.".

Official returns of shipments show a substantial increase in value over those of ]'.):>.'). All that A-.ieiica buys from New Zeiilaud, however, is not necessarily diri-tly exported from this country, but ma> he (wool, for instance) purchased in London or elsewhere. On tiie other hand, most of the articles imported by New Zealand from America are shipped direct, but the 103(i returns towards the end of that year will show some decline on account of cargo held up by the jrreat maritime strike. However, during January of this year New Zealand wool to the Vii'lun of £400,000 was shipped to the United Suites and purchases on American account at the Xew Zealand wool sales h;ive been relatively heavy since this wool left the Dominion.

The exports of New Zealand products in general to the United States for 10311 showed .in increase in value of over 17 petcent on those for IOJ.i. mainly <>n account of sheep products, wool, pelts, and woollcd skins, and rabbit skins occupy a prominent place in the increased values of goods exported. The various items of New Zealand products exported to America during 1936 and 1035 were valued as follows: —
