By winning the Opunake Cup Frieslaud lukled XlbU to Ins winning account Although given a reminder by Morns iu the straight to stave off Tahuiangi's run, the issue was never in doubt, ami Friesland s prospects in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham will be keenly discussed. seen at exercise this morning, Friesland appeared to be in great heart. He evidently does not require much galloping when well and was exercised on the lead. One lias only to remember his past successes to recognise that his trainer, O. Cox, can keep a horse well tor a longer period than most trainers, and although rricsland has won four races on end it ik quite likely that when next produced lie will be ready to run as well as ever previously.
Listed for Riccarton at Easter, Friesland and Lowcnberg may be found taking a prominent part in the decision of the Easter and Autumn Handicaps, a double that Cox just failed to land when Reremoaua won the Easter and Lady Desmond was narrowly defeated in the Autumn Handicap. Lowenbeig looke well and was given steady pace work. Corowa will be the only Hawera representative at the Kangitikei meeting on Saturday, where he will probably run twice, but will be preferred in the distance hack race. After the Stratford meeting on March 20 ( orowa's owner-trainer will concentrate on making him a hurdler. He ran quite a good third in the Opunake Cup, being closer at the finish than at any stage of the race.
The disappointing Vaals- Some Lady mare Kia Ora ran one of her characters tic races at Opunake, being prominent most ot the journey, to fade out at the finish. With speed enough to warrant at least her winning a maiden event, she has consistently failed and is to lie returned to her bleeder at an earl;- date.
Mint Tour, who proved hopelessly affected ill the wind, has been taken out of training and sent home.
Xotilim strode out well in his pace work this Horning and will strip well for his engagements at the Oliinemuri meeting. Student Prime lias freshened up and is down to make his reappearance at the Stratford fixture.
The Giiscony colt Black Friar is to be operated on , and in future will race as a gelding.
Ned Cuttle made a bold bid to win the concluding event at Opunake on Saturday after being badly placed early, and he should not be long in returning to the winning list.
