OFFICERS GO TO ROTORUA.
Invitations to more functions and outings than they will be able to accept during their one weeks visit have been received by the officers and crews of the two-American destroyers Preston and Smith, which arrived yesterday from Pago; Pago. have been given honorary of the Auckland Club and theTßoyal New- Zealand Yacht Squadron while they are here, and will be entertained by the Hon. F. Jones, on behalf of the Government, at a luncheon at the (irand Hotel next Wednesday, and by the Rotary Club, the Officers' Club, the Mercantile Auxiliary Club, the Navy League and by Commander C. B. Tinley, officer in charge of the Naval Base. The captains of the two vessels paid official calls yesterday on Commander Tinley, the Mayor. Mr. Krnest Davis, the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board. Mr C. G. Macindoe. Colonel .T. F. Puigan. officer commanding the Northern Command, and Mr. .T. G. Groeninger. United States Consul. As guests of the Government the two lommanders and three of their officers left to-day f or Rotorua. whence tliey are to retu-n on Tuesday. Two other . ftieers were taken to the races at To Aroha to-day by the Mayor. Mr. Krnest Davie. Dances have been arranged for the [ietty officers and men by the Xavy League, in co-operation with the Flying Angel Mission. They will also be admitted free to the broadsiding at Western Springs stadium. The Navy League will take 30 ratings for a scenic drive to-morrow. The Devonport branch of the Navy League will give a dance at its rooms, for ratings on Wednesday night. The sports grounds at the Naval Bane have been made available to the chips' companies and free transport has been arranged for them in Auckland. Lieutenant V. .Tones, of H.M.S. Wellington, is acting as liaison officer during the destroyers' stay. The vessels will be open to inspection by the public between one and four o'clock each afternoon. McLean (gunnery officer). Lieutenant G. F. Blodgett (medical officer). Lieutenant F. C. Craig. Lieutenant (junior grade) B. S. Hanson, jun.. Lieutenant (junior grade) R. H. Nelson (assistant engineer), Lieutenant (junior grade) C. M. Keyes (first lieutenant). Lieutenant (junior grade) A. W. Slayden (communications officer), Ensign H. M. Maples (commissary). Each carries about 162 ratings.
