UNGUARDED DANGERS

MT. ALBERT CROSSINGS. i IMPROVED WARNING BELLS. * There was a lukewarm reception by the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening of a. notification that the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, had authorised the installation of improved warning signals at the Gladstone Road and Woodward Road level crossings, and the council decided to express the opinion' that further measures to protect the public were urgently needed, particularly in Gladstone Road and Argyle Street. Mr. F. E. Martin declared that unguarded railway crossings should be abolished in a populous borough like Mount Albert. The Mayor, Mr. H. A. Anderson, recalled that the council had made strong representations early last year for the inclusion of the- Gladstone Road and Argyle Street crossings in the national scheme for the eliminating of such danger spots. Later the council was asked whether it was prepared to make some contribution, and it® reply was that the sum received by the borough from the proceeds of the petrol tax was insufficient to provide work of thisskind. It was stated that the Minister had decided upon the provision of a louder sounding bell on the wigwag signal at Gladstone Road, and had authorised a flashing light signal, with bells, at Woodward Road. Thus there would be a more effective warning to road and pedestrian traffic. The council expressed its appreciation of the efforts of Mr. A. S. Richards, iI.P. for Roskill, who had made representations. on the question to the Minister.
