The Paintings Criticised.

Common Faults Explained

Once again our artists had an opportunity to get busy with their paints and brushes, and display their talent in colouring the subject of our rectnt painting competition. The picturesque scene, reminiscent of an old English village, looked doubly attractive when framed in different colours. The colouring of the flower seller was particularly good. A common fault that marred quite a number of otherwise presentable entries, was the incompleteness of the scene. Clouds, minus a background of blue sky, white streets and houses, detracted from the appearance of the picture. A study of surroundings similar to those illustrated, will be found helpful to those who wish to preserve the naturalness of the scene The best effort came from Norma Braddock of Blenheim, the shading in the foreground being especially good. Another good entry came from Joan Wilson, whose flower seller looked very gay in her crimson gown, flowered apron, and black bodice.
