MANAGER FOR EMPIRE GAMES COMPETITION FOR POSITION. NORTH ISLAND TITLES SUGGESTED. Mr. T. C. Hoblts-Jones presided last night at a full meeting of delegates of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, when the nominations of Messrs. J. R. Miller and L. J. Kenny for the managership of the New Zealand team competing at the British Empire (James in Sydney next February were *übunt ted by the I'onsonby Club, its action prompted a debate on the piocedure that should be observed in making nominations for the position. 'Die chairman said such a matter should not have been sprung on the meeting. Replying, Mr. Miller said it was necessary that an effort should be made to have an Aucklander selected, as the managers of previous teams had all been Southerners. It was moved by Mr. (J. W. Bell that nominations should be submitted to clubs for their vote. Mr. Dave Saunders moved as an amendment: That clubs be notified that nominations for the position of manager would close on March 15, and that a vote be taken at the centre's next general meeting. The amendment wis carried. The North Shore Club's application for permission to decide its annual harbour race for' the Morgan Cup on March 13 was approved, and the Ponsonby Club was permitted to hold its annual harbour race for the Molloy Shield on the following day. The inauguration of North Island championships, to be decided annually, was advocated by the Hawke's Bay Centre, which suggested, in a letter, the following events: —Men: 50yds, 100 yds, 440 yds, lOOxds backstroke, 200 yds breartstroke. Ladies: 50yds, 100 yds, 220 yds, 100 yds backstroke, 200 yds breastetroke. The centre conducting the championships, it submitted, should received 15 per cent of any profits. The amount of the travelling expenses of the centres represented should be pooled and allocation of refunds made on a pro rata bask of travelling expenses, and that any net profit remaining after these disbursements should be divided on a 50-50 basis between the centre controlling the meeting and the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. It was also suggested that every effort should be made to billet competitors.
Mr. W. F. Smith (Royal Life-saving Six iety) said that the championships were worth medals rather than certificates, which, it was suggested, should be awarded. Mr. T. F. J. Clench (Dargaville) declared that the result* of the New Zealand championships would detract from the honour of North Island championsh i ps. "Instead of spending money in sending teams to North Island championships," said Mr. F. Matthew (Mount Eden), "I would prefer to help our own affiliated chilis, and to organise inter-provincial contests in Auckland." Mr. .T. H. Miller <Oargavilte) supported the latter view. Champions sent to national meetings, he considered, should he asked to join in assisting country ( lulis liy visiting them and giving exhibitions. •Mr 1 . L. .1. Kenny (Waitemata) thought that if the < ent tv agreed to the Hawke's Hay suggestions it would be guaranteeing support. I nless it wholeheartedly supported tlie proposal it should not express •igi cement, as it would thus be disillusioning tlie Hawke« Kay Centre. Mr. (i. \\ . Hell f\\ hangarei) emphasised the greater right the major centres had to conduct the New Zealand championship meetings, stating that the North Island championships. if introduced, should he allocated to the minor centres He moved, that the Auckland Centre should inform the Hawke's Bay Centre that it supported the iw-heme, provided the .New Zealand champioiwhiiw were granted only to the tour main centre®. I he motion wan carried.
