HORSES FOR SYDNEY.

WOTAN AND LE GRAND. W otan and Le Grand, who are to leave to-day by the Awatea for Sydney, were at Ellerslie this morning, and were given light exercise on the tan track. Both horses look in first-cLiss order, especially Wotau, who is in the right condition to undergo a preparation for important events in Australia. They will <ro over in charge of their trainer, J. Fryer. STABLE AND TRACK NOTES. A FiT HORSE. King Rey. having his first outing since the Auckland summer meeting, gave a good account of himself in the open sprint on Saturday at Te Rapa. He only appeared on the scene over the last tin long, and finishing in great style got up to deadheat with Golden Sheila for third place. King Rey is a very tit horse and it will not be for lack of condition if he fails to run prominently in the Herries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha next Saturday. RACING CONSISTENTLY. Debham is racing most consistently, and he should again run prominently at Te Aroha. At the recent Wellington meeting he won over six furlongs and seven furlongs respectively and was also second over the former distance. His next start was in the Puketaha Handicap, one mile, at Te Rapa on Saturday, and after getting away smartly he was in front across the top and into the straight, holding on to beat Kllonsa by a head. It was a good performance and with 7.7 in the Hot Springs Handicap, one mile, he is not without good prospects. WON NARROWLY. Scotland was allowed to go out at a very long price for a win in the Storei.Memorial Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday, particularly after his third in the Auckland t up. second in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap at EllAslie and his third in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, at Trentham last month. He was well back early and was about the centre of the held in the middle stages of the race. In the straight he came with a great run and just got up to beat Lagoon by a short head. Scotland is a very tit horse just now and with only lib more to carry in the Herries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha next Saturday he should be in the picture again. RATHER UNLUCKY. Royal Vaals was having her first race when she contested the -Juvenile Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday, but she was slow away and finished about sixth. On Monday she was well back crossing the top, but was fourth at the home turn. She put in a run about half way down the straight and in a great finish Trilliarch. Royal Bachelor. Airam and she went across the line together, the judge, who was the only one who could tell, placing her fourth. She tried to get through a few yards from the post but was disappointed. If she had succeeded there is little doubt that she would have won. Royal Vaals is by Vaals from that good mare Royal Doulton and more will be heard of her. AN IMPRESSIVE START. Tout le Monde was given a run in the Storey Memorial Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday, in which he finished fifth. On Monday he was saddled up for the Raglan Hurdles, and as this was his first outing over the battens in public, he was not greatly fancied. He was allowed to settle down early and ran up into fourth place about six furlongs from home, and he was going easily in this position when the home turn was reached. His rider had him in front when the field had straightened up for home and lie went on to win with his ears pricked. It was a most impressive win and the next time he is seen out in this department he will not lack for support, for he can both jump and stay well. A GOOD SPRINTER. One of the most improved sprinters in the Auckland province is Whirling, who is trained by A. J. Julian at Te Rapa, and the son of Whirlwind should again make his presence felt at Te Aroha. On Saturday, in the President's Handicap at Te Rapa, he hopped away quickly, but Golden Sheila and Deficit soon headed him and he followed this pair into the straight. He put in a great challenge about half a furlong from home and got up to beat Deficit by a neck. Oil Monday, in the Flying Handicap, Deficit was well clear of the held entering the straight while Whirling was well back. However, lie again finished solidly and getting on terms with Deficit at the distance won in convincing style. TWO SECONDS. Deficit was rather unlucky to encounter Whirling at the Waikato meeting during the week-end for he was the only one to finish in front of him in the open sprint each day. In both races Deficit was one of the leaders, the first day being accompanied by Golden Sheila into the straight, while on Monday he was well clear of the others at the home turn. However. Whirling finished too solidly for him on each occasion, though on Monday it appeared that his rider took things a bit too easily when he reached the straight. If he had kept Deficit going from that point onwards Whirling's task would have ■been made a lot more difficult. Deficit showed good form in the spring wheu he won the Wanganui Guineas and he looks as though he is about back to his best again. He may be better suited by the Te Aroha course and with the minimum in the Waihou Handicap he should again be in the picture.
