FLYING BANNERS.
PROOF OF LOYALTY?
CORONATION SIDELIGHT. FAPAKURA DISSENT.. '"The flyinjr of banners and flashing of lights is not necessary to prove our loyalty," was the statement made by a member of the Papakura Town Board last evening when a letter was received by the board from a display company offering to supply certain decorations for the coming Coronation period. Mr. H. E. McKntec, chairman, eaid lie was opposed to wasting money on such things as these. "Surely," he added, "we are not going to be stigmatised as unlnyal because we do not fly some pieces of rag and so waste the ratepayers' money. The Government is sending a contingent to London. All these thing* which might be right in London should not apply to us 10,000 miles away. I move that we take no action with regard to the letter."' Mr. D. Weir: The flying of banners and flashing of lights is not necessary to prove our loyalty. Our present King and Queen would not wish us to spend money on such trash. Air. (;. W. Kerr: I agree with the chairman to some extent, but we could donate the money to some suitable object. Mr. G. F. McDonald: I must disagree, all state you are a loyal people but the sending of the soldiers to London will not cost the ratepayers here anything at all. I think we should cooperate with the echool committee. The pageantry and putside show will have an effect on the school kiddies, and for the good it will do we should do something. Other members expressed similar views, but the motion was carried bv five to two, Messrs. McDonald and bpinley voting against. Later in the evening the chairman again referred to the Coronation, and said he had been thinking the question over, and thought perhaps some permanent memorial of the Coronation would be the correct thing, and he had in his mind something like a children - * playground. The board decided to get into touch with the school authorities and review the question afterwards.
