VEHICLE TESTS.

In your issue of the 10th in*t. 1 he Auckland City Council is reported to have decided to apply to the Minister of Transport for the sole right to test vehicles under the traffic regulation* for the metropolitan area. Sir (Jeorge Richardson stated he did not think that the council should apply for this right to test vehicles, as it would he unable to handle all earn in a reasonable time, although if this was granted it would not come into force for two years, as authority has been granted to garagea for that time. I do not agree just because Wellington has decided to do the testing that Auckland should. There may be many reasons for Wellington adopting that which could never apply to Auckland. As to the Hon. B. Martin's statement that it would place the garages in an invidious position to have to tell their client*! that they, would need to have repairs carried out. it is all rubbish. I would say the opposite—that if my garage man pointed out a defect I would be very pleased, on the assumption, that a stitch in time saves nine, and perhaps lives, in this case. Mr. Anderton's statement that customers would not like it is not right, ■« it is to the customer's interest. It is very nice of Mr. Bland to tell us he i« going to have a rake-off of £7034 |kt annum. Mr. Bland suggests tests within a radius of fourteen miles. This would take In as far as Mannrewa, a full half-day's work. 2S miles and time wa it in «r. etc.. in the city: besides the cur travelling miles at .'id per mile ami driver's time 10/ added to the 2/tl—a nice little bill, to in* repeated if any adjustments were required twice a year. Mr Hland i-> \ery generous to the owner-driver. <:. F. DRIVE.
