WIDOW'S TRIAL.
CONDUCT OF A HOUSE. INSPECTION BY JURY. With the exception of certain information for which the jury inquired the hearing of evidence in the retrial of Maine (Jordon Heart, widow, aged 48, on a charge of knowingly permitting her premise* in Pitt Street, the Hotel Kanclall, to he used for habitual prostitution, was concluded this morning. The case is being heard before Mr. Justice Uallan. Mr. V, R. Meredith, Crown prosecutor, is in charge of the case for the Crown, and Mr. J. J. Sullivan represents the accused. Kvidence was given oj behalf of the accused liy several people who had stayed in the house, and who testified to its orderly conduct. One of the witnesses was a plain clothes constable who stayed there for a week in November with his wife. Both the constable and his wife stated that they saw nothing wrong in the conduct of the house. At the conclusion of the evidence the foreman of the jury mentioned several matters on which they would like information and the Court was adjourned for a few minutes to enable Mr. Sullivan to consult accused. On resuming it was decided that the jurj should inepect the premises before the accused was recalled to give evidence as to the padlocking of a certain room and the arrangement made with the Chinese cook to run the dining room at one period. The foreman asked if definite information could be -jiven as to the number of permanent boarders, on which subject witnesses had differed.
