IN BAD CONDITION. EDUCATION BOARD QUERY. COMMITTEES' LIABILITY ? The statement that very few buses | used in the conveyance of school ' children in the country would measure up to the Transport Department's requirements was made n_* .Mr. \V. I. Howyer at tlic nii'i'tiiij; of the Auckland Kducation Hoard this morning. Some of them, he said, were in a very bad condition, and in the event of an accident, he understood, the school committee would be held responsible. Mr. T. I.*. Wells, wlio presided, said that the new regulations would surely require an inspection of these buses and it would be a State responsibility to see 1 that they were in order. It was pointed out that the inspectors of the Transport Department were already blwy and that a number of buses that had been built at the Otahuhu workshops had had to be altered in order to meet the requirements of the inspectors. '"The running cost this year will be greatly increased." said ' Mr. Wells, j "The provision and maintenance of | buses is already an enormous cost." It was pointed out that many of the vehicle*; used in the far North—cream 1 lorries and the like- were totally unsuitable for the purpose. A number ' ;of new buses would probably be required to meet the new regulations. It was decided to seek ad\ ice from ' the Crown Law Office rejjnrdinjr the liability of school committees in the event of accident*.
