"FORGOTTEN EMPIRES."

TALK TO ROTABXANS. There was a good attendance at to-day's lunch meeting of the Auckland Rotary /Sub, held in Milne and Choyce's reception hall. The president, Mr. D. Henry, occupied the chair and among the visitors were: Messrs. W. S. Bromhead (London), A. J. Burnett (Los Angeles), R, Woods (Utah), N. Alexander (Dannevirke), G. Penman, H. V. Turner and J. W. Carr (Wellington) and L. J. Harvey (Hastings). The speaker of the day was Mr. A. J. Burnett, of Los Angeles, who gave an illustrated address on "Forgotten Empires." He dealt mainly with the results of archaeological investigations in Mexico. A remarkable set of lantern slides depicted the remains of Mayan civilisations. Modern discoveries, he said, showed that hundreds of years before Christ a people arrived in South America equipped with all the knowledge and refinements of civilisation. Whence they came and where they had acquired this knowledge was still a mystery. Their work in cement and concrete showed that they possessed a secret in building construction that had been lost with them. Their calendar system was well nigh perfect and their achievements in astronomy were notable. The vote of thanks was moved by Mr. Duncan Rae.
