Two years ago a German elephant arriving in Goole dock from Hamburg stepped into a waiting railway van--and went through the floor. Last month the same elephant arrived with t' ircl j companions. He has been going i» i,n * out of railway vans all over Europe during the past two years—but lie wouldn't risk' walking into a van at Uoole. Trainers and dock staff coaxed, bulliM'j used fodder as bait inside the van—a» in vain. After a five-hour battle « wits they chained him to one of hi» companions, used bait —and cheered &*> he was dragged into the van.
