WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.
A PROMISING NOVICE. According to a southern writer Delapaix was lucky to beat Wynnn in the Suburban Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday. Wynnn broke at the start and lost several lengths.. He paced very fast to take.third place when four furlongs had been covered, and he held that position to the straight, where he looked as if he would win, but Delapaix, who had enjoyed a perfect passage all the way, finished too well for him. Wynnn. is a three-year-old gelding by Grattan Loyal from Olwyn, and is trained by 11. Holmes for Mr. O. Evans.
A FINE EFFORT. The American colt Starwyn made many friends by his good showing in the Woburn Trial Handicap at Wellington last Saturday. He drew an outside position at the barrier and was slow to get on the journey. He was back in seventh place when the field had settled down and raced in that position until a mile had been covered. Fraser then pulled him out and he flew past the field to join Ace High in the lead before another furlong had been covered. He came on in the straight, but Ace High finished well under pressure and beat him by a length. Starwyn is a fine pacer, and now that he has become acclimatised he will make appreciable progress during the autumn.
NEW ZEALAND-BRED WINNER. Racing at Gloucester Park, Perth, opened with the Trotters' Handicap, limit 2.35, run over one mile and three-quarters, jnd it marked the first success of the New Zealand-bred square-goiter Strt'nd By, who was.imported to this State by Mr. J. R. Hallam (says an Australian paper). That sportsman did not profit, however, by She euccess of the Nelson Bingen gelding, ae he recently disposed of his interests to Mr. Jas. Hand. In addition to Stand By, Mr. Hand also started Great Way, and they ruled as equal favourites during one stage of betting. Stand By was driven by A. McLean, while Great Way had the services of L. J. Keys. Although Stand By was conceding 102 yds, the field had not travelled far before McLean had his charge within striking distance of the leaders!' and beginning the last circuit he rah to the front, eventually to run home an easy winner by 21 yards from the tubed Diplomat and Rare Gem. Stand By won so #n.0.-.;v'- ♦!>"* l>- clinnlil soorc ng^in. He is an 11-year-old '.'elding by Nelson Bingen from a Bon Honime mare,, and was bred by Mr. W. R, Dooley, of Oamaru.
