ATHLETICS.

RECENT SPORTS REVIEWED,

SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES.

DDXEDIN BOY'S FIXE MILE,

After a postponement from Anniversary pa}', Tc Awamutu lieltl its annual meeting last week, and was rewarded with a large attendance of the public. *

Miss M, Reekie ran exceptionally well to defeat Miss I. Campbell in the 75yds handicap. She received 4%yds start and was timed at S 4-as, which is almost 11s for the hundred. A. J. Denz followed up recent sprint Buceesses by winning the 100 yds final. Denz lias been very impressive indeed, and the fact that he only received half a yard from Charlie Goosman speaks for'itself. Sam Carter made a welcome reappearance, placing second in a heat but missing in the final. Field was outstanding in the shot put and polo vault. In an exhibition shot put lie did 40ft 294 in, which is the best effort recorded in the province to date. Young McOnie had a great day out. Xot only did he win the boys' race, but he led in the juniors in addition. Percy Lindsay won the mile nicely "in 4.30 2-5. A two-mile steeplechase added a spice of variety to a big programme. This contest, popular in overseas countries, is seldom seen here. Morgan won the event with the two 'I'rens filling the minor placings. As was expected, Ray Croinpton collected the Lynndale Club's three-mile championship title. Crompton's running last winter and this summer has been not only excellent but steadily improving. He must possess a very nice future on the j track, and already he is well to the fora, as a national cross-country man. Jack Dolan sMcks to'the walking. He would shape even butter if he let -himself go from the- hips instead of attempting to "stride it." Considering that he runs as well lie makes a very good showing. Lynndale has a good junior sprinter in H. Stenberg, who won the club 100 yds title in 10 4-ss. He swells the ranks of Auckland's really outstanding junior athletes. Jliss Mavis Giinrod, who has been placed so many times this year, actually was timed to do the 100 yds in 11 1-5*3 at Ellerslie. A following wind helped her, but the time is wonderful. "Miss Theltna Kench and Hiss Jlartyn jointly hold the record, and the writer believes that Miss Norma Wilson also equalled the time. Miss Grinrod's showing makes Auckland's chance of placing first and second at the national "meeting very bright indeed. It is a rare meeting which goes by now without Sayers and Baiubridge being placed highly. At Ellerslie both performed up to theit highest standard. Sayers won the 440 yds and the half-mile. Both in pood times, too. from good iields. He looks like collecting at least one provincial title and making a big showing in the national ones in "March. Bainbiidgo looks to be getting back to the form which earned him such plaudits at Wangnnui a few years back. Blockley and HeManus ran well also. They are" always hard to beat; the better the 'company the better they go. Roger Cameron was not placed higher than third in the mile walk, although he recorded G. 54. He is a real hope this year against Driscoll, of Hawke's Bay, the present New Zealand champion. At Otaliuhu he gave the greatest mile exhibition of his career when lie led lii'-N. .McCarthy by 50yds. It was the time of 6,50 which caused comment, however, as this is outstanding. For Cameron to record 6.54 again is most encouraging to AuckMcCarthy goes to Wellington this week, and will consequently be lost to Auckland sport." He has. done much to add interest in his particular department. , Aueklaiiders will have to literally pull their SOclMJjß^Jjgw -JjfILM, EfeJS. Otago, we have been ..applauding, looks -a ..iittio. ijoor beside the Dunedin mans run. 11ns a wonderful indeed from a national point »f view, and let us hope that Aucklanders will see l'ullar do even .better on the Domain in March. A 4.18, or better, aiiler is a great draw at any meeting. .
