CYCLING.
WITH THE AMATEURS. 1 PAPATOETOE CLUB EVENTS. The Papatoetoe Cycle Club has always been keen to giva new events to members and spectators, and last Tuesday hi* on something novel which "caught on" well, and was enjoyed by all. This took the form of a cycle relay. The result was a victory for R. Mclnnarney's team (R. Mclnnarney, Allan, Beehre, Waterman, Carter and Glendinning), who won by a length from A. Mclnnarney's team (A. Mclnnarney, Archer, Pinfold, Chappell, Ludlam and Johnson), after a great finishing lap by the captains, the McInnarneys. Don Arvidson was in fine form to win the C grade miss-and-out from two of the grade's other leading boys, Tom Taylor and Ira White. These three have a fine chance in their grade championship and at the centre meeting on Saturday next. Tom Moore once again won the C grade short distance event, and appears the pick of the C grade sprinters. Pat Boland, second, appears to be getting his muscles into shape now, and George Eyre, third, rode one of his best races for the track season. Bill Renwick won the final of the B grade half-mile. Renwick is a powerful pedaller, and showed remarkable pace to get within ten yards of picking up the scratch men in the five-miler. Bill McGhie, who was conspicuous as a junior in road races two seasons ago, was second in the half-mile. Tom Hema was third. In winning his heat Hema put up a very fine performance to clock two seconds only outside the track record for the distance, when riding from the 15yds mark. A fine win was registered by Bill White when he won the B grade five miles, after a hard unpaced ride from a back mark to catch the bunch. Junior Jim Middleton waH* second, a fine ride with an 80in gear, and Laurie Knott was third.
Jim Lt4lam again impressed as a possible junior champion, for he was placed third in both A grade events. Jim is also a popular and successful rider at Manurewa and Otahuhu.
Roy Taylor won both A grade events from scratch, _ further enhancing his prospects of winning a provincial or Dominion championship, although his performance in the four-miler was marred by the reluctance to take a lap. On the. other hand, Charlie Cochrane was often forcing the pace at the head of the field.
"Bubs" Allan rode well to finish second in the one mile. Last week "Bubs" rode at five meetings, at Ellerslie, Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Otahuhu, and again at Ellerslie. Consistent Jim Archer was second in the four-miler, and should do well in the A grade at the centre meeting. At Ellerslie on Monday Clarrie Allan was second from scratch in the two-mile open. At Manurewa Sel Webster won one wheel race, and Jim Middleton was placed high. "Tippy" Taylor won the other and broke the lap record. At Otahuhu on Thursday Sel Webster _ was again riding well to win the half-mile A grade from Ted Johnson. Stan Winterburn won the half-mile B grade from Laurie Knott. After this event the meeting was concelled owing to the greasy track, which caused a spill. At the Passenger Transport Cup meeting to-night a record New Zealand field is contesting the three-mile events. Of the fort.v-two entrants (divided into two grades) there are seven scratch riders (R. S. Triner, M. P. Byrnes, A. G. Patrick, R. T. Taylor and C. R. Gooder, and the Mclnnarney brothers). It is thought this is the largest entry received for a threemiler; which suggests the popularity of the track and a coming boom in cycling, as well as being a tribute to Maurie Franklin, and a vote of confidence in his handicapping. Four Hamilton cyclists are making the trip.
