50 YEARS A HEADSMAN
DEIBLER'S RETIREMENT. *, - NOMINATES SUCCESSOR. PARIS. France's famed headsman, Anatole Deibler, hereditary executioner for the Third Republic, announced his intention to retire after presiding at the. guillotine for half a century. Weary of the macabre position in which he has performed 270 executions, the aged "Monsieur de Paris" informed the Government he wished tojeave his post early in 1937. The 68-year-old executioner wanted to give up his duties for some time, but had been isnable to until he found some one competent to take his place. The gray-bearded patriarch, who looks like a retired French business man, has a right to name his successor. He suggested to authorities his successor be his nephew, Andre Obrecht, middle-aged, automobile mechanic, who already is practising Vbeheading" bundles of straw.
