MORE HOUSES.

STATE ACTIVITY. EXTENSION CF SCHEME. PLANS FOR SMALL CENTRES. (By Telegraph.— Association.) WELLINGTON", this day. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, stated to-day that work in i connection with preparation of the j Orakei housing scheme in Auckland j having been completed, the Department I of Housing Construction was now pro- j ceeding to prepare schemes for housing in Christchureh, Dunedin and Palinerston j Xorth. j The number of houses provided for in j each contract would be smaller than the ■ number provided in the Auckland and 1 Wellington contracts, so as to facilitate their more rapid commencement, but, of course, other houses would be ready by the time "the initial groups were completed. With Cliristchurch, Dunedin and Palinerston North out of the way it was hoped to move on to provincial towns, such as Wanganui, Napier, Hastings, Hamilton. Timaru. Invereargill. CJisborne, Masterton, Nelson, Greymouth and Oamaru. In all these groups the contracts let would be again fairly small, leaving further groups to be prepared while the initial contracts were under way. Following on the places mentioned there would be a very considerable number of towns, such as Whakatane, Thames and Ashburton. that would have to be dealt with. There was scarcely a town tlia'* was not clamoring for a scheme, and the Department was spreading its activities as rapidly ai possible commensurate with efficiency. j
