RED CROSS SOCIETY.
NEW JOINT COUNCIL. FIRST CONFERENCE HELD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The first conference of the joint council of the Red Cross and Order of St. John was held to-day, Mrs. T. H. Lowry being in the chair. Colonel J. J. Esson, chairman of the council, congratulated the eociejty on the successful accomplishment of the merger and wished it good fortune in the ensuing years. He urged the importance of the society's relying rather on its own efforts than on the Government. Mr. L. O. H. Tripp said he hoped the two bodies would work together in harmony. He felt there was plenty of scope for the activities of the new body. Sister Bridges, of the Florence Nightingale International Foundation, England, gave an account of the work in public health and various aspects of Red Cross activity in Europe and England. The alarming incidence of malnutrition in New Zealand was emphasised by Sister D. J. Stringer. She said that after visiting various schools she had discovered that the malnutrition evil was much greater than people realised, and in the nutrition field the Red Cross Society could do valuable work.
