THE SCHOOL YEAR.
TEACHERS' EARLIER RETURN. MINISTER'S INSTRUCTIONS. All school teachers in New Zealand, primary and secondary, are required, under instructions from the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, to report at their schools on February 22, a week before the opening date, March 1 The Minister in issuing these instructions has asked all teachers "to make thorough preparations for the new year's work." It was stated by an official of the Auckland Education Board yesterday that all teachers in its area had been notified of the Minister's instructions. No detailed advice had been received from the Minister as to the manner in which the teachers were to prepare for the work. However, there was much to Ibe done in the way of preparing schedules of lessons, time-tables, lists of books and assisting with enrolment, and so on. The nature of the preparation would rest with the headmasters of the schools. The teachers no doubt would be required for a few hours daily. "The Minister ' doubtless wants teachers and pupils to make a flying start with leeeons on March 1 on account of the month's delay in the beginning of the school year," stated another man interested in education. "A number of teachers have been spending their holidays in other centres, including Otago, and the Minister may wish to make sure not only that all teachers will be present at the commencement of the school work, but also that they have been isolated for a reasonable period from areas which have suffered more than others in the recent epidemic of infantile paralysis."
