The referendum overwhelmingly authorised the return to wnrk. The unions called meetings of their members immediately to formally inform the men that the strike was ended. Tile shipping lines are continuing bookings and there arc prospects of early sailings, although the situation may be complicated by a new strike of longshoremen in British Columbia ports. In all 40.000 men and 2:W ships were affected by the strike. Harry Bridges, leader of the longshoremen, stated: "The 40.000 men are grateful and I am only one of them." - Cheers resounded along the raindrenched waterfront when the decision to return to the ships was announced. Business interests estimated that the cost of the strike will total 080,000,000 dollars, and they say its. end has rescued from slow stagnation 1000 companies and 500 exporting offices. It is estimated that 50,000,000 dollars' worth of cargo is awaiting movement across the piers. At I-os Angeles there are 2:54.000 tons of cargo and S2 waiting ships.
