MISS NIAS.
Aucklanders have learned with astonish-1 nient of the existence, and with pleasure ofthe presence in New Zealand, of Miss Caroline' Xias, the daughter of that Captain Xias who, as commander of the frigate Herald, brought Captain Hobson to Xew Zealand and stood with the colony's first Governor at the signing of the Treaty of AVaitangi. That was nearly a century ago, in a time which to young people may seem like antiquity. Like many of the happenings of classical antiquity, the events at the beginning of the Dominion are in some aspects obscure, or they are the subject of controversy. Miss Xias has come to New Zealand, 07 years after her father, to vindicate his honour. The authoritative information she has brought will no doubt enable her to accomplish her object; it will also form a valuable addition to Xew Zealand's historic;: records. In welcoming Miss Xias, Xew Zenlanders hope that she will come again, tc participate in the Centennial celebrations, ils the guest ol" the Government. Who would have a better claim to that honour 5 i
