THE NUTMEG TREE.
1 Nutmeg and mace come from the same plant, the nutmeg tree, which grows in the East and West Indies and in Brazil, although it is a native of Malaya. The tree reaches a height of about 30ft. It has large leathery evergreen leaves, which give out a rich odour, and small, pale yellow flowers. The pear-shaped fruits open into two nearly equal halves, and the nutmeg is then "disclosed surrounded by a fleshy fibrous covering, which is the mace. Like the nutmeg, 7t lias a very strong scent. Tlie nutmeg tree begins to bear fruit when it is eight years old and goes on for about GO years. Xutmeg and mace are used not only in cookery, but in medicine as α-stimulant and to disguise the taste of unpleasant druss.
