TRAIN HITS CAR.
PALMERSTON N. ACCIDENT. MOTORISTS ESCAPE LIGHTLY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTOX X., Friday. A remarkable escape was experienced by two residents of Palmerston North shortly after noon to-day, when the Wellington - Xew Plymouth express struck a car in which they were driving at the Monrad Street railway crossing.
The car was almost over the crossing when it was struck by the engine, which travels at a fast speed at this locality. The driver of the car, Mr. Basil Leige Corry. of 212, Princess Street, suffered only slight injuries and was able to proceed home, but Mr. Jack Davis, 15, Waldegrave Street, a passenger in the car, was not so fortunate. He was conveyed to hospital, and it was found that he had suffered abrasions to the face and legs, with shock.
The car turned off the main road into a hollo\v by tin' crossing almost out of sight of the train, and appeared about to stop. Howove-.-, it came slowly up over tho line and was struck on the rear wheel. It was swept into a drain on the other side of the crossing, and came to rest with its nose against a telegraph pole, both occupants being (lung out, one near the ear and the other close to the cattle stop.
