PLAYING AT WAR.
Air and Naval Struggle for Singapore. AIRCRAFT-CARRIER BOMBED. (Received 11.30 a.m.) • SINGAPORE, February 3. The combined naval, air and military manoeuvres to test Singapore's vulnerability will end to-morrow, and there is every indication of a big "battle" for its possession taking place to-night. Naval patrols and coast defences last night were actively engaged in beating off Blue Land destroyers which attacked the eastern entrance and attempted to land small parties. The judges determined that two destroyers had been put out of action and that the landing parties had been driven off with heavy losses. There have been no air attacks on Singapore yet, but the aircraft-carrier Hermes, most important of the attacking craft, was sighted to the east-north-east.
Red Land aircraft attacked her before she was able to launch her bombers. Blue Land bombers attacked the Selctar aerodrome, while Red Land aircraft, after the attack on the Hermes, were returning and landing.
