NEW DWARF MAGNET.

MORE POUTER THAN "GIANTS."

PHILADELPHIA, Pa

A dwarf magnet, which produces a magnetic field more powerful than any of the giant magnets now in use for the smashing of atoms, was describod here before the closing sessions of the autumn meeting of the American Philosophical Society, founded in 1727 by Benjamin Franklin "for the promotion of useful knowledge." The new "magnetic David," while only 1C centimetres long and no more than 22 centimetres in diameter (about 68 inches), can develop a magnetic field nearly three times as powerful as the "Goliatha" among the magnets weighing as much as eighty-five tons, such as used in the famous "merry-go-round" cyclotron apparatus originally devised by Professor Ernest O. Lawrence at the University of California. The new "Jack, the Gaint Killer" in the magnetic world was designed by Professor Francis Bitter, of the Massachusetts Institute of Tvchnology.
