INCREASE IN SAVINGS.

The increased spending power of the community is not all being used. The Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones, reports that last year the deposits in the State Savings Banks, and also the excess of deposits over withdrawals, were both substantially greater than in 1935. At the. end of the year the amounts deposited totalled ( £54,900,000, or £4,100,000 more than at the) end of 1935. Such figures help to correct the! impression, made by occasional reports of personal extravagance and shiftlessness, that 1 the community is "living for the present" and looking to the Government to provide for its future. The returns go to show that the great majority , have not abandoned their habits of thrift. They are saving for th° •ramy day," and also, for more substantial pleasures than are to be gained by spending j the last penny from the weekly pay envelope
