TENNIS TITLES.

AUCKLAND TOURNEY. - SEMI-FIN Al>B PLATED. '' ' Kims&Z BRIGHT MATCHES. Infemipted by y Friday's rain, . the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual championship tonrnament - was continued at Street .courts on Saturday on . semi-dead,', courts and in a tricky wind. Conditions' difficult throughout the day. ■'..: Chief intereet in the' morning matche* centred in the of, the men's and women's A grade singles. After his sensational victory over D. C. Coombe, the national: champion, on Thursday, M; T. Wilsjn, the Eden and Epsom crack, was expected to go through to the final, but he fell a 'victim to the youthful Kemuera player, A. D. Brown. The match went only to three sets. Start's Close Call. N. G. Sturt had a,close call in the semi-finals of the men's A grade singles when the youthful J. W. Gunn took him to five sets. For the greater part of the match the tennis was slow, both players exercising the greatest caution. With a lead of two sets to one, Gunn looked as though he might score a spectacular victory, but Sturt's experience and gallant fighting spirit won him the fourth set. The fifth was a titanic struggle in which the score fluctuated throughout, while the crowded galleries applauded. The best tennis of the match was produced in this set and at times both players reached brilliant heights. Victory eventually went to the more experienced Sturt, fr—l/ o—6/ 3t-6, 6—3, 8—«. Bright and. spectacular tennis was produced in ; -the ffemi-finalfl of the mixed doubles.' The title holders, D. C. Coombe and Miss Dulcie Nicholls, of Wellington, were far too strong a combination for J. W. Gunn and Miss Margaret Beverley, and won 6—l, 7 —5. The 1935 winners, N. G. &turt and Miss Marjorie Macfarlane, were taken to three sets by J. C. Charters and Miss Ruth Taylor. Sparkling Doubles. Tennis with a sparkle was provided in the semi-final of the men's championship doubles. In grim four-set match A. D. Brown and J. T. Mayson, the Auckland colts, scored a spectacular victory over D.. C. Coombe, the New Zealand singles champion, and J. C. Charters. Brown and Mayson won the two first sets at 6—4, but dropped the third set to love. Then came a delightful fourth set, with Coombe and Charters fighting hard to stave off a defeat. But the combination and speed of Brown and Mayson were too much for the Wellington pair, and they carried off the fourth set and the match amid applause. Brown and Mayson teamed splendidly throughout, and* therein lay the secret of their success. Brown", incidentally, was responsible for a remarkably fine performance in the (men's A grade singles. He fought hie I way through to the final , without the Joss of a set. and was only once taken to an advantage set —in his semi-final with M. T. Wilson. The second semi-final, in which N. G. Sturt and J. W. Gunn eliminated the Eden and Epsom brothers .1. S. and M. T. j Wilson had not all the brightness of the other, but it was an interesting contest I throughout the three sets, which ran j 7 —-'. «—2, 7—5. It offered a wide range of doubles styles, varying net work of a good standard with base line play. Results: — MEN'S A GRADE SINGLES .fTitle-holdor. E. D. Andrews!) Seml-flnnls. r,-"V.
