TRANSFER TO NEW LANDS.
SPECIAL TRAINING SCHOOL.

Commenting to-day on the problem of the Te Hapua Maoris, the acting Minister of Native Affairs, the Hon. F. Langstone, eaid the Crown land south of Te Kao was capable of development for the natives. A large number could be employed in preparing the area, and the younger Maoris could be gradually transferred to small farms to become useful producers.
A full-time district nurse should be employed between Te Kao and Te Hapua, added the Minister, and free midday echool dinners would be continued.
The Minister said he had already consulted with the officers of the Native Affairs and Lands Departments with a view to immediate relief measures being taken. Money would be made available, and it might he found necessary to build a school hostel for teaching the children housekeeping, cooking and sewing, the pupils being allowed to go home only at week-ends. He woukl make a full report to the Prime Minister on his return to Wellington, together with recommendation* for the permanent improvement of the lot of the native people in the area.
