HOPMAN BEATS QOTST. TURXBULL LOSES TO BROMWICH. (Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. In the Australian lawn tennis championship yesterday Harry Hopman beat Adrian Quist, the title holder. The score was 11—9. 3-L6, 7—5, ti—3. This was the second major upset of the tourney, as Miss Joan Hartigau, the 1936 woman champion, was eliminated the previous day .-by Miss D. Stevenson (Victoria), 4—6, 6—3, 6—4. Hopman out-geueralled Quist with clever variations of his fame, which upset Quist, causing him to lose much of his customary accuracy. Crawford, owing to being less enthusiastic than his young; opponent, went perilously close to being beaten. Bromwieh, who is rapidly playing himself into the Davis Cup team, outplayed Turnbull at all stages, losing only four games. Results:—Singles : Bromwieh beat Turnbull (South Australia), 6—2, 6—2. 6—o; Crawford beat L. Schwartz (South Australia), 6—3, 2—6. 3—6. 6—2, 6—3; McGrath beat A. Kay (Victoria), 6-2, 6—2, B—6. VINES STILL WINNING. BEATS PERRY THRICE RUNNING. (Received 9 a.m.) NEW YORK. January 27. At Richmond, Virginia. Ellsworth Vines beat Fred Perry. 6—3, 3—6, 6—4. This was the American's third consecutive victory over the Englishman. Since Perry and Vines commenced their professional tour this month they have played eleven times. Perry won on their first throe meetings. Then Vines, who had hoon in hospital for a spell, signalled his discharge by scoring in the next three. Then Perry got homo twice again, while Vines has been victorious three times this week. Net result: Vines six wins, Perrv five.
